Students will be able to develop an understanding of certain aspects of NOS. (creativity, observation vs. inference) Students will perform activities that encourage creativity through learning how to raise heart rate Students will journal at the end to help with understanding of circulatory system. B) Standards National Science Standards K-4 Science as Inquiry: Abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry K-4 Science as Inquiry: Understanding about scientific inquiry K-4 Earth and Space Science: Properties of earth materials K-4 History and Nature of Science: Science as a human endeavor Indiana State Academic Standards K.1.1 Raise questions and the natural world K.1.2 Begin to demonstrate that everybody can do science 1.1.2 Investigate and make observations to seek answers to questions about the world 2.1.5 Demonstrate the ability to work with a team but still reach and communicate ones own conclusions about findings 2.1.3 Describe, both in writing and verbally, objects as accurately as possible and compare observations with those of other people K.2.2 Draw pictures and write words to describe objects and experiences 1.2.7 Write brief information descriptions of a real object, person, place, or event using information from observations 2.2.5 Draw pictures and write brief descriptions that correctly portray key features of an object 1.5.2 Make and use simple picture graphs to tell about observations K.6.1 Describe and object by saying how it is similar to or different from another object D) Materials 27 mechanical pencils 6 packs of crayons 1 pack of construction paper 8 kid-friendly scissors Large chart paper 1 permanent marker E) Lesson Description 9:30-9:40 Review of last weeks material **Students will be grouped by age/grade for this session.** (Muscles- Where they are; Inference and Observation; etc.) 9:40-9:55 Muscle activity (Left from last week; where they will cut out the muscles and place on the body.) 9:55-10:05 Introduction of circulatory system Read Book Interesting points Share new vocabulary terms Heart Vein Pulse Artery 10:05-10:15 Discuss activities that can raise your heart rate 10:15-10:20 Explain how to take pulse 10:20-10:35 Take pulse and complete worksheet after: Laying Down/Staying still Walking (in place) Jumping Jacks 10:35-10:50 Discuss activity Does everyone have the same heart rate at rest? After the different activities? What does this mean? Explain that there is a wide range of normal heart rates. Why is the heart rate different for the three activities? Remind students that the heart is a muscle and like other muscles, exercise makes the heart muscle stronger. Ask what the students think their hearts are doing during the different activities. Remind students that the heart is part of the circulatory system where the arteries, veins, and capillaries work with the heart to deliver oxygen and nutrients to the whole body. 10:50-11:00 brainstorm ideas on keeping hearts healthy. 11:00-11:15 Restroom Break/Snack 11:20-11:30 Watch video online (Link Below); and discuss 11:30-11:45 Explain stethoscope, and let students have a chance to listen to their own heart beat. 11:45-12:00 Journal--- Students will create an activity schedule that they could complete after school. 5-E Learning Cycle Engage Instructors will ask the students What do you remember about last weeks lesson? to gauge new vocabulary terms related to NOS learned last week. Then, Instructors will ask if students know which muscle helps move blood throughout the body Explore Students will explore the various ways to raise pulse (heart rate) through an interactive activity. Students will have a chance to sit still, walk in place and do jumping jacks to see how their pulse changes. Students will have a chance to journal at the end, activities to raise their heart rate. Explain Instructors will discuss with students the ways to raise heart rate, and it they relates to the human body. As well as what students can do to stay active.
